We decided to try quail! The idea behind quail farming came as an activity for our homeschool development. We wanted a mini farm, something that our son could begin to manage as he matures. Not only does it foster a sense of responsibility but we hope it can lead to a first business. The plan is for him to be able to see the fruits of his labor by selling his farm products. We are not considering using them for meat birds. Mostly just for eggs and chicks to sell at market.
The aviary is near completion. We are going with a permaculture style farm. The quail will roam freely in a live plant aviary. Their droppings get turned in the soil. There is also a natural water flow that runs through the aviary down to a catch pond with an overflow that will drain into our composting area.
Stay tuned for updates!
As of may 2025, the aviary is pretty much completed. We still have plenty of landscaping to do and plant additions to the interior area. The quail seem to get along with Kurtis the pheasant pretty well, and I know Kurtis enjoys the company. We currently have 10 quail. We are getting a few eggs per day and our son has started to enjoy the egg hunting. They don’t lay their eggs in the coop even though it is in there. They prefer to lay in the tall grasses we have added to the inside. So its kinda like an Easter egg hunt everyday.
